چکیده

Introduction Lignin is the second most abundant polymer on earth and is found in almost all biomass resources. This inexpensive feedstock is an ideal carbon source that can be used to makes fuels and chemicals. However, there are substantial challenges to convert it into a liquid fuel [1]. Lignin is an amorphous polymer consisting of randomly branched phenylpropenyl (C9) groups. The linkages between these groups are primary ether linkages (C-O-C) [1]. The conversion of lignin into a usable product involves cleavage of such linkage, known as deetherification. In this presentation we discuss our catalytic de-etherification strategies for lignin and lignin model compounds.

A supramolecular proposal of lignin structure and its relation with the wood properties.

In spite of the great importance of cellulose the lignin is considered the second most abundant substance of the wood. However, little attention has been given it, mainly to wood properties. The lignin as well as other structural compounds (cellulose and hemicelluloses), has obviously an important role on the wood properties, probably due its composition and existent bonds. In general lignins h...

Au th or ' s pe rs on al co py Immobilized methyltrioxo rhenium ( MTO ) / H 2 O 2 systems for the oxidation of lignin and lignin model compounds

A convenient and efficient application of heterogeneous methylrhenium trioxide (MTO) systems for the selective oxidation of lignin model compounds and lignins is reported. Environmental friendly and low-cost H2O2 was used as the oxygen atom donor. Overall, the data presented and discussed in this paper point toward the conclusion that the immobilized heterogeneous catalytic systems based on H2O...

The Structure and Conformation of Lignin as Judged by X-ray Crystallographic Investigations of Lignin Model Compounds: Arylglycerol Β-syringyl Ethers

Structural elements of the arylglycerol β-syringyl ether type are very frequent in hardwood lignins. A variety of crystalline dimeric lignin models representing different diastereomeric forms of structural elements in lignin of this type have been studied using X-ray crystallography. Bond distances and bond angles in the model compounds are in all probability nearly identical with those of the ...

Analysis of Structural Units and Their Influence on Thermal Degradation of Alkali Lignins

The chemical structures of four alkali lignins isolated from poplar, fir, straw, and bagasse were investigated. To explore the relationship between the structural units and the thermal decomposition behavior, the system was tested by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectrometry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and pyrolysis-gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The r...

Quantitative (13)C NMR analysis of lignins with internal standards.

Novel protocols for acquiring quantitative (13)C NMR spectra of lignins have been developed using the internal reference compounds 1,3,5-trioxane and pentafluorobenzene. Trioxane offers a convenient internal standard for collecting inverse gated proton decoupled (13)C NMR spectra for lignins, whereas pentafluorobenzene can be used to provide information on the amount of methine carbon using the...
